According to the definition of Young et al. (2006) schemas are \u201cbroad, pervasive themes regarding oneself and one&#8217;s relationship with others, developed during childhood and elaborated throughout one&#8217;s lifetime, and dysfunctional to a significant degree.&#8220; <br \/>Four types of early life experiences can be differentiated that can lead to the development of a schema:<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><ol><li>Continuing\/ toxic frustration of emotional needs (too little of a good thing)<\/li><li>Traumatization or victimization (the child is harmed or victimized)<\/li><li>Overprotection (too much of a good thing)<\/li><li>\u201dOverload\u201c of adult themes (e.g. parentification after divorce) <\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-576ad01 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"576ad01\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6a6fede\" data-id=\"6a6fede\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0019326 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"0019326\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>References: <br \/>Young, J.E., Klosko, J. Children using this strategy appear distant, it is hard to get a feeling for them, and they appear as if they were sitting behind a glass wall. <br \/><strong>Surrender<\/strong>: giving in to schemas and repeating them over and over. Your perception of the world can be biased by your negative expectations. This strategy leads to a reduction of inner tension based on the notion: \u201ethat\u2018s me\u201c (ego-syntonic). Nevertheless, the degree of internal suffering usually remains high. <br \/><strong>Overcompensation<\/strong>: doing the opposite of what the schemas make you feel. Again, the perception is often biased to enhance one\u2019s self-esteem (self-serving bias; (\u201eI knew it before\u201c). Children may appear self-confident and autonomous, while being fragile and easily confused. While these states are each associated with a schema, it is not possible to allocate them 1-to-1. A schemarepresents a trait, and a mode is comparable with a state.<\/p><p><br><\/p><p>There are 4 main types of modes I-II-III-IV (including subgroups A,B,C &#8230;): <br>I. Child modes: \u201eThe little &#8230;[name of the child]\u201c&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>II. Demanding and punishing modes: \u201eThe critical &#8230; [name of the child]\u201c <br>III. Immature coping modes: \u201eEmergency-&#8230; [name of the child] \u201c <br>IV. Clever-mode: \u201eThe clever &#8230;[name of the child] \u201c <br>In therapy with adults this mode is called the healthy adult mode.
